Cultural Bridges: KaleidoscopEurope Programme starts showing its cultural colours

“KALEIDOSCOPEUROPE” Programme, led and coordinated by Italy through the Italian Institute of Culture in Ankara, has the Italian Institute of Culture in Istanbul, Middle East Technical University (METU) and State Theatre, Opera and Ballet Employees Foundation (TOBAV) as Project partners plus a high number of important Activity partners from Turkey and Europe. Within KaleidoscopEurope Programme, 123 activities will be organised in 34 locations (21 in Turkey and 13 in Europe).

The Project, funded by the European Union within the framework of EU-TURKEY Civil Society Dialogue “Cultural Bridges” Programme, has a global budget of €1.665.052  and will be completed in 20 months.

The heart of the programme is to ensure the cooperation of European and Turkish cultural actors and operators in order to build a lasting and sustainable dialogue and partnership, able to improve a mutual knowledge and understanding among people.

“Colours of Creativity Bridging Cultures” is our leitmotiv. In fact, the project, as a kaleidoscope, presents different aspects of the European and Turkish cultures in a colourful and attracting manner. And, as it happens in a kaleidoscope, it invites people to change their point of view in order to feel the richness of cultural similarities and differences.

Culture is an essential dimension of the process of accession of Turkey to European Union, although a controversial one. Both in the European Countries and in Turkey there are two opposite attitude: many argue that Turkey would not perfectly fit into the European civilisation, and, many others, on the contrary, consider Turkey to be naturally part of Europe, sometimes overlooking the existing differences. This gap in the respective perceptions, on both sides, needs to be addressed, and bridged, through a process where similarities are brought to evidence, and differences are led to be considered not as an impediment, but as enrichment for any parts involved in the process.

This project considers art makers, art producers and performers as an effective – and often underestimated – bridge between cultures and civilisations. With their work, they are capable to explore the intimate connections linking together people and societies, and thwart the sometimes superficial views channelled by the media. A special focus is devoted to contemporary art - paying the due attention to tradition - and on the educational aspects of the activities. The Mediterranean, a crossroad where civilisations meet and often clash, is the standpoint chosen to show how participating in a common creational process can be conducive to a better understanding, while asking no one to give up his identity.
